    Presumably it's carbon neutral as long as you plant a new tree for each one you burn. Wherein lies the catch - you get maximum carbon sequestration for your buck by planting more of those damn fast growing, pollen laden cryptomeria japanica rather than replanting Japan's primeval forest species.
